WORK IS EVERYTHING / WORK IS NOTHING

2016 Site-specific performance by Marta Lodola. Duration 3 hours. Materials: founded machine metal piece, repetition.

“Serial work” is what I based my action on as a destructive element of human potential that takes over the life of the individual. The repetitive action has been my primary choice to work on, as it reminds me of my personal experience with the exploitation of men through the factory work. Strength and repetition are elements that create a routine or kill individuals and their creativity, when misused. This cathartic ritual recalls my teen experience, when I worked in a factory for a few months before starting studying art.

In a site-specific action held in an old mine with a huge metal structure, I find a metal bar that I use for the entire duration of the performance. I explore the metal structure sliding the metal bar over a railing, until I reach the furthest point, where I start hitting a bell that was part of the machinery, while I scream “Work is everything, work is nothing”. Repetition, exhaustion and overcoming fear are the main concepts of this work.
