The Alchemy of Plants – Holistic Art Workshop
at Nourished Berlin-Edible Alchemy, Kreatur Space in Moosdorfstr. 7-9, 12435 Berlin
“The highest cause of medicine is love.”
— Paracelsus
Duration: 3 hours
Date 23rd November 2024
from 2 to 5 pm
The plant world and astrology are part of what is known in alchemy as spagyria, a practice focused on extracting planetary principles through working with plants. Alchemy is a science that bridges chemistry, philosophy, medicine, astrology, and esotericism, passed down through nearly all ancient civilizations over millennia. It shares connections with Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, Islamic and Jewish traditions, and forms the foundation of Western medicine. In Greek and Roman times, the link between plants and alchemy became more explicit. Texts like *Herbarius* and Dioscorides’ *De Materia Medica* dedicate countless pages to detailed descriptions of plants, highlighting their healing and spiritual properties. These writings became valuable sources for medieval alchemists, who viewed plants as living essences capable of influencing the energies of both body and spirit.
In the vast realm of alchemy, plants are not mere passive ingredients but serve as a bridge, an intersection between the earthly world and the arcane spiritual heavens. Each herb, flower, or root contains within it an essence, a vital principle, which can be extracted, purified, and used for various purposes—both medicinal and spiritual. Nature is seen not just as a source of raw material, but as an open book, revealing secrets through its living symbols. In the alchemist’s workshop, plants were honored as mediators between heaven and earth. To the alchemist, the plant symbolized the union of solar (masculine) and lunar (feminine) principles. This dualism was essential to alchemical work.
One of my recent illustration projects focuses on this invisible connection between plants and planets, exploring how we can instinctively and intuitively connect with the knowledge of both. This wisdom has been part of human civilization from its earliest days. Painting a subject means first observing it, understanding it, and faithfully copying it to establish a relationship with the plant and its qualities. Each plant carries elements connected to celestial bodies, and our intuition guides us to find the correlation between what we need to evolve and the remedies we seek. This workshop is not just a creative gathering, but a journey of discovery, knowledge, and transformation through the creative practice of watercolor painting and ecoline inks. In the beautiful setting of Edible Alchemy, renowned internationally for their innovations in fermentation and culinary research, we’ll be surrounded by the atmosphere of living foods and the wonderful plants in their space, which surely contribute to the success of their creations.

“Il senso del corpo”
On line performance art workshop for students between 11-14 years old, Friuli Venezia Giulia, organised by IoDeposito in the secondary school project “Comfort Zone” 2021
ph Margerita Marinoni
Through the exploration of the five senses, one gets in touch with the world and perceives the reality. Our senses are considered our gateway to the outside world. How can we consciously use them to stimulate our creative qualities? How can they show us new ways of experiencing things? In this process of rediscovering and consciously using our five senses, the body becomes our best teacher and source of knowledge. Through the exploration of the individual’s perception, every participant develops a personal interpretation of one or more senses in relation to the movements and the objects they choose to work with.
“THE BODY – ARCHIVE OF THE LANDSCAPE”
Performance Workshop & Artist Talk by Marta Lodola, Kunsthalle am Hamburger Platz, curator Sajan Mani, Berlin 2019
ph Sajan Mani
How can we influence the social dynamics of common spaces? How can we elaborate experiences in order to rethink the spaces and to stimulate social cohesion? How can we live these spaces in a conscious way?
The workshop aims at providing a shared space for performative experimentation in a public location. The main focus is to provide experiential methodology on the relationship between the individual and the surrounding environment. The research process revolves around the identification of connection points. The topics are: the body as an archive, the social body, resonance and influence in the human-environment context.
The working process takes place in different areas of the “Kunsthalle am Hamburger Platz”, connecting private and public, inside and outside, intimacy and sociality.
“Images from The Self”
Workshop for blind photographers by Marta Lodola, Werkstatt für interkulturelle Medienarbeit WIM e.V., Berlin 2018
ph Karsten Hein
The body is an instrument of all-round perception; through the inner gaze we explore ourselves and the environment, generating a process of construction of a new reality.
In the context of the photography course for blind people held by the photographer Karsten Hein, I was invited to develop a bodily exploration within the performative practice method, which combines the sensorial explorations of objects, lights and movements with the improvisation.
The combination of movement and exploration of the inner imagination are the starting points from where every participant develops its own performative idea related to photographic methodology.
“Performance Art: l’arte di essere presenti qui ed ora”
Masterclass by Marta Lodola with the students of the Master of Performance Art at Brera Academy of Art, curated by Valerio Ambiveri, Milan 2017
ph Marta Lodola
Relating to one’s own body while discovering the possibilities of movement is what guides us towards the creative power that is naturally available in everyone.
The body becomes a sensory medium through which we experience reality by means of repetition, stillness, authentic movement and relation with objects. At the same time, the body leads us to the connection with others, as a catalyst for the story of the individual but also of the collective. The self becomes a tool for acting and interacting by generating images and meanings in the present moment.
I will be glad to offer a workshop in academies, festivals, galleries, rural communities and both non-conventional and occupied spaces.
